ABSTRACT

This article analyzes the volume and structure of international banana trade using FAO data for 2010-2024. Over the 15-year period, the authors calculated average annual export and import figures for all countries involved in the global trade of this tropical fruit. Fifteen countries with the highest results were selected for each of these two international trade areas, and two rankings were compiled in tabular form. The authors determined that the top five banana exporters accounted for 66.47%, the second five for 14.39%, and the third for 7.27%, for a total of 88.13% of the global total. At the same time, calculations revealed that similar indicators for global imports of the studied tropical fruit amounted to 46.21%, 20.40%, and 10.00%, respectively, and 76.62% for the fifteen countries combined. Furthermore, within the stated study timeframe, three five-year periods were identified, for which the corresponding absolute (in thousands of tons) and relative (in %) parameters of their participation in global banana exports and imports were determined for each of the selected countries. The countries that are leading in these areas of international trade were identified based on the absolute positive or negative change in the corresponding average annual volumes for 2020-2024 compared to 2010-2014. For a number of countries, based on a comparison of the indicators calculated for these periods, trends in their participation as exporters and importers of the studied tropical fruit were characterized in more detail.
