The article presents long-term data on the effect of stem density on the crop structure and productivity of new varieties of winter wheat in the steppe zone. The aim of the research was to establish optimal parameters of productive stem density for new winter wheat varieties of the Russian Academy of Sciences on the basis of three-year (2023-2025) field studies in the conditions of increasing aridity of the climate of the steppe zone of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic(KBR). Field experiments are based on a short–rotation crop rotation on the pre-Caucasian carbonate heavy loamy chernozem (humus 3.0-3.5%, P2O5 – 140-270 mg/kg, K2O – 200-260 mg/kg). Four varieties were tested: Yuzhanka (standard), Alamat, Basiyat and Taulan. It has been established that the new varieties significantly exceed the standard in terms of the elements of the crop structure. The maximum weight of grain from an ear (1.60-1.70 g) and a plant (3.45-3.50 g) was formed at a density of 4.1–5.0 million plants/ha. The maximum annual average yield was formed at a density of 5.0 million plants/ha: the Basiyat variety has 5.57 t/ha, Taulan – 5.43 t/ha, Alamat – 5.38 t/ha, which is 0.60-0.74 t/ha higher than the Yuzhanka standard (4.83 t/ha at 4.1 million plants/ha). The varietal specificity of the reaction to the compaction of the agrocenosis has been revealed: for Alamat, the optimal density is 4.1–5.0 million plants/ha, and for Basiyat and Taulan – 5.0 million plants/ha. The introduction of optimized stem density parameters for new breeding varieties from the institute provides additional profit at the level of 7,150-9,620 rubles/ha and is recommended for farms in the steppe zone of the KBR.
