The paper is dedicated to discussing one of the reasons for the declining state of modern agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), which is the prevalence of rather backward economic and cultural types of agricultural production. In the course of bibliographic analysis, the author identifies 6 such types, and most of them belong to swidden cultivation, which is low-productivity and harmful to soils. The author evaluates certain historical and geographical facts that led to the formation and use of swidden cultivation in the pre-colonial period. The paper explains the high prevalence of this type of agriculture in Africa.
